May 2026

May

May brings a renewed focus on brain health, awareness, and connection—a meaningful time to learn more about dementia and the many ways we can support those living with memory loss. Whether you’re a caregiver, a family member, or someone beginning to notice changes in yourself or a loved one, you’re not alone. Understanding dementia early and accessing the right resources can make a real difference in quality of life.

Dementia affects millions of individuals and families, yet many people are surprised to learn:

  • Dementia is not a normal part of aging—it’s caused by specific diseases that affect the brain.

  • Early signs often appear gradually, including changes in memory, communication, or problem‑solving.

  • Healthy lifestyle habits—such as staying socially connected, being physically active, and managing chronic conditions—can support long‑term brain health.

  • Caregivers experience high emotional and physical stress, making support groups, respite, and community resources essential.

This month, we’re highlighting tools, education, and services that help families navigate memory changes with confidence and compassion. From caregiver support groups and respite services to homemaking, and volunteer transportation, Northwoods Caregivers is here to walk beside you.

We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended the Honoring Elder Wisdom Conference. With over 130 attendees and representation from nearly every tribal nation in Minnesota, the gathering was a powerful celebration of culture, knowledge, and community. Your presence and participation helped create an inspiring space where elder wisdom was uplifted and shared.
